HOLIDAY GARBAGE COLLECTION

Please note the following changes to residential garbage collection for the upcoming holidays.

Tuesday, December 25, 2007 (Christmas Day)
Tuesday’s garbage route will be collected on Monday, December 24

Wednesday, December 26, 2007 (Boxing Day)
Wednesday’s garbage route will be collected on Thursday, December 27

Tuesday, January 1, 2008 (New Year's Day)
Tuesday’s garbage route will be collected on Monday, December 31

Residents are further advised that the landfill site will be closed on December 25 and 26, 2007, and on January 1, 2008.

GEORGE JONES IN CONCERT

Music legend George Jones will be performing at the Gander Community Centre on Sunday, April 20, 2008, beginning at 7:30 p.m.

Tickets are $47 each (taxes and service charges included) and go on sale 10 a.m. Friday, November 16, at the Community Centre Box Office or by phone at 651-5927 with a Visa or Mastercard.

Fans can choose between seating in the bleachers or on the main floor, and seats will then be assigned by best available at that time.

TCH DISCRETIONARY USE

Pursuant to Section 14 of the Urban & Rural Planning Act, notice is hereby given that the Council of the Town of Gander is considering a Development Regulations Amendment for the Commercial Highway zone on the Trans Canada Highway. It is Council’s intention to add Rest/Retirement Home to the “Discretionary Use Classes” of the Commercial Highway zone in order to accommodate a development proposal within this zone.

FALL CLEAN-UP

Posted: September 28, 2007

The Town of Gander Fall Clean-up will take place during the week of Nov. 5-9, inclusive. The Fall Clean-up System is as follows:

1. Under this system, each street will be completed once during the Fall Clean-up period.

2. Clean-up refuse will be picked up the day of your scheduled household garbage collection.

3. Please do not mix household refuse with clean-up.

4. Please do not put out refuse before or after the designated dates for the Clean-up.

5. To have car wrecks removed, please call the Public Works Department at 651-5938.

6. All loose material (pieces of lumber, glass, gyproc, etc.) must be in appropriate containers and branches and tree limbs must be tied in bundles (maximum of 6 foot lengths) for disposal.

7. Rocks, gravel or concrete will not be removed.

8. Hazardous waste such as propane cylinders, paint, pesticides, oil, etc., will not be collected but should be dropped off at the Elizabeth Drive Shopping Centre, during Household Hazardous Waste Day which will be held Sunday, Oct. 28, 2007.

9. Tires will not be collected but should be recycled by placing them in the trailer at the rear of Professional Tire on McCurdy Drive.

The Town of Gander will be holding a Household Hazardous Waste Day at the Elizabeth Drive Shopping Centre on Sunday, Oct. 28, 2007. This service is free to all residents of Gander for household products. Get the hazardous waste out of your house and help the environment as all products will be recycled.

What to Bring:
• Motor Oils Solvents
• Propane Tanks
• Glues
• Brake & Clutch Fluids
• Wood Preservatives and Stains
• Cleaning Fluids
• Disinfectants
• Paints: Oils & Latex (do not mix)
• Drain and Oven Cleaners

• Paint Stripper, Turpentine
• Aerosol Containers
• Fire Extinguishers

BISHOP STREET RE-ZONING

The Town Council of Gander has adopted Gander Municipal Plan Amendment No. 17, 2007, and Development Regulations Amendment No. 22, 2007, which propose to re-zone a block of land, formerly the St. Joseph’s/St. Paul’s school site on Bishop Street, from Public/Institutional (PI) & Open Space Recreation (OSR) to Residential Medium Density (RMD).

A Public Hearing to consider objections and representations on the Municipal Plan and Development Regulations amendments is scheduled for Tuesday, the 30th day of October, 2007, at 7:30 p.m. in Council Chambers at the Gander Town Hall, Gander, NL.

Anyone wishing to make an objection or representation at the Public Hearing shall, before 12 noon on Friday, the 26th day of October, 2007, deposit with the Town Clerk of Gander, two copies of a signed written statement outlining the objection or representation. If no written objection or representation with respect to the Municipal Plan or Development Regulations is received within the time indicated, the Public Hearing may be cancelled.

Notice is hereby given that the Town Council of Gander has received an application from Mr. Chris Lush to construct an accessory building at the above noted address which will exceed the total permitted lot coverage for accessory buildings in a residential zone. AVIATION MUSEUM SEEKING VOLUNTEERS

The public is encouraged to attend the Annual General Meeting of the North Atlantic Aviation Museum, May 22, 2007, at Hotel Gander, beginning at 7 p.m. The Museum is a key tourist attraction for this region and depends largely on volunteers for many of its programs and activities. AMENDMENTS REGISTERED

Take notice that the Town of Gander Municipal Plan Amendment No. 15, 2007, and Development Regulations Amendment No. 20, 2007, adopted on the 21st day of February, 2007, and approved on the 4th day of April, 2007, has been registered by the Minister of Municipal and Provincial Affairs.

In general terms, the purpose of Municipal Plan Amendment No. 15, 2007, is to re-designate a parcel of land, approximately 1.6 hectares in size, located on Gander Bay Road, from Rural (RURAL) to Residential (RES). The purpose of Development Regulations Amendment No. 20, 2007, is to re-zone the same parcel of land from from Rural (R) to Rural Residential (RR).

The Gander Municipal Plan Amendment No. 15, 2007, and Development Regulations Amendment No. 20, 2007, come into effect on the day that this notice is published in the Newfoundland Gazette. Anyone who wishes to inspect a copy of these amendments may do so at the Town Office, Gander, during normal working hours (8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.).

Motorists are advised that snow clearing regulations will be enforced from December 1, 2006, through April 30, 2007. During this time, no vehicle shall be parked on any street between midnight and 8 a.m., regardless of weather conditions, nor may any vehicle be parked such as to impede or interfere with snow clearing operations at any time of the day or night, at any time of the year.

SNOW CLEARING NEAR FIRE HYDRANTS

Residents are asked to please be aware of the location of fire hydrants when they are clearing snow from driveways. Blocked hydrants from residential snow clearing can hamper the efforts of Municipal Works personnel when clearing the hydrants in a timely manner. Your cooperation is appreciated.

SHOFA/ATHLETE OF THE YEAR NOMINATIONS

Nomination forms are now available at the Gander Community Centre Administration Office for those wishing to nominate an athlete, coach or builder to the Gander Sports Hall of Fame/Archives. Forms are also available for anyone wishing to nominate a youth for male or female Athlete of the Year.

HEARING - GANDER BAY ROAD RE-ZONING

The Town Council of Gander has adopted the Gander Municipal Plan Amendment No. 15, 2007, and Development Regulations Amendment No. 20, 2007, which propose to re-zone a portion of land between 450 and 500 Gander Bay Road from a Rural land use designation to Rural Residential. A Public Hearing to consider objections and representations on the Municipal Plan and Development Regulations amendment is scheduled for 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 28, 2007, in Council Chambers at the Gander Town Hall, Gander, NL.

Anyone wishing to make an objection or representation at the Public Hearing shall, before 12 noon on Monday, March 26, 2007, deposit with the Town Clerk of Gander two copies of a signed written statement outlining the objection or representation. If no written objection or representation with respect to the Municipal Plan or Development Regulations are received within the time indicated, the Public Hearing may be cancelled. WETLAND STEWARDSHIP AGREEMENT

At 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 14, the Provincial Minister of Environment and Conservation, the Honourable Clyde Jackman, and the Mayor of Gander, Claude Elliott, will be signing an amended Municipal Wetland Stewardship Agreement between the Town and the Eastern Habitat Joint Venture.

The Town of Gander first signed this Stewardship Agreement in 1993, committing to being steward of the wetlands within its planning boundaries. The Town of Gander has requested the addition of two new management units within our stewardship zone. This designation recognizes the importance of these areas for waterfowl.

TRAFFIC LIGHTS REPAIRED

The public is advised that the traffic lights and pedestrian crossing signals at the Cooper/Roe intersection have been repaired and all functions are now working normally. Motorists and pedestrians are reminded that this is a "smart" intersection, where lights respond directly to approaching vehicles, sometimes skipping unnecessary cycles. Always exercise caution and obey signals promptly.

CHRISTMAS TREE DISPOSAL

The Town of Gander wishes to advise residents that discarded Christmas Trees will be picked up on regular garbage collection days during the week of January 8-12, inclusive. They may also be dropped off at the clearing provided at the Raynham ballfield during this week.

Residents are asked not to put trees out by the curb after this date as it may interfere with snow clearing.
