Animal Control / Patrol

As there is no official Animal Control Officer, Gander's Community Constables, in conjunction with the SPCA, maintain this service through a cost sharing initiative. Any problem with animals within the municipality is first taken care of by the municipal Police; then the SPCA are called in accordingly. In situations of animal abuse, the SPCA is contacted immediately for their advice/approval and/or assistance. The animals dealt with have ranged from domestic cats and dogs to wild bears, moose and beavers. The animal shelter is located on McCurdy Drive, adjacent to the Town's Municipal Works Depot, and is operated by the SPCA.

Snowmobile & All-Terrain Vehicle Trail

The Community Constables have been instrumental in creating this trail around Gander. The trail starts at the Hotel Gander and ends at the Albatross Hotel. In partnership with the Gander and Area Snowmobile Club, the Municipal Police Department helps to maintain the trail for snowmobiles and other all-terrain vehicles in the winter, and for walkers in the summer. Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics

The Gander Municipal Police Department has been instrumental in raising money annually for this cause since 1992. At least $1000.00 is raised and usually 100 t-shirts are sold. This event starts at the bridge in Glenwood, about 15 minutes west of Gander, and continues for 100km east. Participants may walk or run, and they usually do one section in relay style. Others who have been involved in past runs are the RCMP, Wildlife and the Military Police.
