Parks and Playgrounds

Recreation is a cornerstone of life in Gander. As a proud recreation hub for central Newfoundland and Labrador, the Town of Gander offers a wide range of facilities that support active living, community connection, and outdoor enjoyment. Whether you're skating at the Steele Community Centre, walking the boardwalk at Cobb’s Pond, or playing a game at a local field, recreation is part of everyday life in Gander—and a key part of our identity.

Soccer, Track and Field

Gander’s sports infrastructure continues to grow with the addition of a state-of-the-art turf soccer pitch and track and field facility on Penney Avenue. This new complex features:

  • A FIFA regulation-sized outdoor soccer field
  • An eight-lane rubberized running track suitable for training and competition

These facilities support local soccer leagues, school athletics, community events, and regional tournaments. They are maintained by the Community Services Department. For bookings or inquiries, contact 709-651-5927.

Note: The former soccer pitches behind Gander Academy are no longer in use.

Baseball/Softball Fields

The Town maintains:

  • 3 ballfields at the Field Complex (corner of Elizabeth Drive and Memorial Drive)

Lions Club Splash Pad

Located at the corner of Elizabeth Drive and Memorial Drive, the Splash Pad is a community project by the Gander Lions Club, in partnership with the Gander Consumers Co-op Society and the Town of Gander. Open daily from 10 AM to 8 PM (weather permitting) during summer months. Bathroom and change facilities are available.

Playgrounds

Gander’s playgrounds feature modern, safe equipment and are located at:

  • Elizabeth Drive
  • Edinburgh Avenue
  • Nungessor Avenue
  • Magee Road (Cobb’s Pond)
  • Raynham Avenue
  • Gordon Street

Skate Park

Located at the Field Complex, the outdoor Skate Park includes a Quarter Pipe, Pyramid, Grind Rail, and more. Open daily from spring to fall. Helmets are mandatory; scooters are welcome.

Golf Course & Driving Range

The Gander Golf Club offers a scenic and challenging 18-hole Par 70 course overlooking Gander Lake. Originally a 9-hole course, it now features large sculpted greens, deep sand traps, and a modern clubhouse with restaurant and bar. [Gander Golf Club Website]

Gander Tennis Association

Located at 101 Memorial Drive, the Gander Community Tennis Association operates 4 outdoor courts. Plans for an indoor court are underway. [Gander Tennis Website]

Swimming Pool

Gander’s indoor heated Olympic-size swimming pool (25m) is located at the Arts and Culture Centre and includes a viewing area. [Gander Pool Website]

Softball & Baseball

At the Field Complex:

  • 3 softball pitches (1 lighted)
  • 1 baseball diamond

Gander Curling Club

Located on Airport Boulevard, the Gander Curling Club features 4 sheets of ice, a lounge, and a dance floor. The club hosts seasonal bonspiels open to public participation. [Gander Curling Club Website]

Gander Rod & Gun Club

A registered non-profit with certified facilities:

  • 100m rifle/pistol range
  • Trap (shotgun) field
  • Archery range
  • Clubhouse

Airport Nordic Ski Club

Located 3km west of Gander on the Trans-Canada Highway:

  • 16km of groomed ski trails
  • 6km of ungroomed snowshoe trails
  • 3km of lighted trails for night skiing

Outdoor Ball Hockey / Basketball Court

This fenced blacktop lot on Airport Boulevard is ideal for pickup basketball or ball hockey games.
