Rat Prevention and Control

Rats are a common pest in communities across Newfoundland and Labrador. Prevention is the most effective way to reduce rodent activity, and everyone, whether you rent, own, live, or work in Gander, has a role in keeping properties clean and well maintained. 
Pest control on private property is the responsibility of the homeowner or property manager. 

About Rats

Rats live outdoors year-round and often move indoors as weather cools. They are commonly found around buildings, sheds, gardens, and areas where food or waste is accessible. 

Rats are nocturnal, meaning they are most active at night. When food and water are limited, or when populations increase, rats may be seen during the day. 

Rats will nest anywhere that provides shelter, food, and water. This includes: 

  • Under wood piles 

  • In abandoned vehicles 

  • Between walls 

  • Under floors in garages or sheds 

  • Outdoors, burrowed into the ground near food sources 

Rats mature quickly—within three months—and can have several litters each year, making early prevention important. 

How Residents and Businesses Can Help

Reduce Food Sources 

  • Store garbage in rodent-proof containers with tight-fitting lids. 

  • Remove fallen fruit, old vegetables, spilled seed, and other food scraps. 

  • Feed pets only what they will immediately eat and remove leftovers. 

  • Store pet food, bird seed, and lawn seed indoors or in sealed, rodent-resistant containers. 

  • Compost properly — do not add fish, meat, dairy, or cooked foods to backyard bins. 

Reduce Water Sources 

  • Fix leaking taps, drains, or hoses. 

  • Remove items that collect standing water.

Reduce Shelter and Hiding Places 

  • Keep yards clear of clutter such as old tires, wood piles, and unused materials. 

  • Cut tall grass and trim vegetation around your home or building. 

  • Secure compost bins to prevent access. 

  • Keep areas around bird feeders and bird baths clean.
     

The most effective long-term control is denying rats access to food, water, and protected hiding places. 

Pest Control Responsibilities

Pest control on private property is the responsibility of the homeowner.

Rat Control Methods

Common methods used by pest control providers and homeowners include: 

  • Traps 

  • Glue boards 

  • Rodenticides (use with caution) 

  • Ultrasonic devices (limited effectiveness; should be used with other methods) 

Important Safety Information

Rodenticides can be dangerous to pets, livestock, children, and wildlife. 
Always: 

  • Use tamper-proof bait stations 

  • Follow product labels 

  • Store products safely and out of reach
