Step back 25 years and hear the personal stories behind one of the most extraordinary chapters in Gander’s history - Operation Yellow Ribbon.

Untold Stories – Reconnected brings together “Plane People,” local residents, and others who experienced the events of September 11, 2001, firsthand. Through personal reflections and shared memories, they will revisit the six unforgettable days that changed Gander, Newfoundland and Labrador, and the lives of thousands of passengers and crew who found themselves welcomed into communities across Canada.

We are pleased to welcome The Honourable David Collenette, Canada’s Minister of Transport on September 11, 2001, as a special guest. Minister Collenette will share his firsthand perspective on the events of that day and Canada’s unprecedented response to the thousands of passengers diverted to communities across the country.

Through stories of compassion, resilience, unexpected connections, and hope, speakers will share experiences that have remained largely untold over the past 25 years.

This special evening offers a deeply personal look at the human side of September 11 and the remarkable response of the people of Gander and surrounding communities. It is an opportunity to hear the voices behind the history, reflect on the connections formed during those six unforgettable days, and help preserve these stories for generations to come.

Join us for an evening of reflection, gratitude, and storytelling as we reconnect with the people and memories at the heart of one of the most extraordinary stories to emerge from one of the world’s darkest days.

The 25th Anniversary Commemoration Service will take place September 11, 2026 at 2 p.m. at the Steele Community Centre. 

The final release of tickets for the Service will be available tomorrow, Thursday, August 27 at 11:00 a.m.

Water Shut-Off - August 27, 2026

Please be advised that there will be a water shut-off tomorrow August 27, from 11:00am - 3:30pm for infrastructure repairs affecting the following addresses:

-75-104 Memorial Drive
- 73 Airport Blvd

Additionally, there will be a traffic advisory at 93 Memorial Drive during this time.

Last week, the Town of Gander held two Community Safety Engagement Sessions as part of the development of Gander’s Community Safety Plan.
 
The sessions were facilitated by Purposeful Group and included a presentation on research and feedback gathered to date, along with opportunities for participants to provide input.

Road Closure: August 24–25, 2026 – Nungesser Avenue

Please be advised that Nungesser Avenue will be closed on Monday, August 24 and Tuesday, August 25 to conduct a sewer lateral repair.

During this time, there will be no through traffic at 36 Nungesser Avenue.

DISCRETIONARY NOTICE - 26 Medcalf Street

Notice is hereby given that Council has received an application from Shine on Wheels Car Detailing & Mobile Services to operate a home office for a mobile car detailing, lawn care and snow removal service from 26 Medcalf Street.

It is noted that home occupation is permitted as a “discretionary use” for the zone in which this property is located.
